A well set up deck should have eliminated chafe on running rigging completely – but that is almost a utopian situation.  Rather it is a problem that needs constant vigilance.  In the days of inexpensive polyester rope, which was the only show in town, it was worse as that stretchy material would easily saw through itself on almost any object.  Today’s modern fibers, due to having hardly any stretch at all, are less prone.  However, if you do chafe then read these line chafe tips to prevent this from happening.

Periodically run out your halyards

There is no excuse for chafe on the lines that are easily seen.  If there is a problem these can be changed by better block or fair lead positioning.  By contrast inside the mast the degree of chafe on a line is always a mystery, and a lost halyard due to an unknotted end will almost certainly imply a twist around something else when dropping it from the top.  It is a good practice to periodically run out your halyards with a messenger to check this as, depending on how your exit boxes are set up, there is usually a portion of the halyard that is never sees the light of day.

Keep an eye on your jib furling lines

Another tricky line prone to chafe are the jib furling lines when the sails are partially furled. Depending on the position of the first lead block running aft, and how it is furled (under load or flogging) it can ride up or down on the drum and eventually chafe on the drum cheeks.  Every time you furl you must check where that lead lies on the stack.  A lazy person will use binoculars.  I always go forward and have a look. Usually a kick on the line will clear it, or possibly an ease from the cockpit and rewind with your foot on the line will do the same.  Plus, this gets you forward to take the time to check all else that always needs checking!
