For our next Women In Sailing feature, we catch up with Rianne of Feel the Breeze. Rianne, together with her husband Gerben and son Benjamin, has a dream to travel around the world, exploring, and discovering. They do this by sailing across oceans and driving Landys. This is one family truly living their best life.

We catch up with Rianne to find out what it’s like living everyday at sea:

How did you get into sailing?

Via my boyfriend four years ago. He invited me for a sailing trip to prepare his boat for selling due to some unfortunate circumstances. After three days of sailing, I decided to buy his boat. Prior to that, I had never sailed before.

What do you sail today and where?

We sail a Beneteau 57, a center cockpit sailing yacht designed by Bruce Farr. We started sailing in Spain towards Turkey, did a refit over there, and sailed her via Greece, Montenegro, and Croatia to Italy. Our plan is to circumnavigate and cross the Atlantic Ocean this year.

What sails do you use?

We use the high-performance endurance sails from Ullman Sails. Our main and genoa are one year old and were manufactured by Ullman Sails in Turkey. Since the sails are more important than our engine and we sail almost every day of the year we invested in a new set. We are very satisfied with the shape, performance, and quality of this set of sails.

What is your greatest sailing moment?

Wow, there are too many sailing moments. Sailing during the night under the Milky Way with the full sails out, a gentle breeze, watching shooting stars and the fluorescent plankton is the greatest sailing moment I ever experienced. This was between Milos and Santorini in Greece last summer.

What do you love most about sailing?

We love the fact we move our sailing home just by the wind and every journey is special, from champagne sailing between the islands to rough weather sailing. I love doing both.

What do you find most challenging about sailing?

The most challenging part for me is the constantly changing circumstances. As we live aboard we have to face them and can’t decide to jump on land when it starts blowing 50 knots of wind.

What is it like sailing as a family?

Sailing as a family is what we truly love. We started sailing when Benjamin was three months old, in a basket and sleeping a lot. Nowadays at 2.5 years old he is everywhere and wants to help to hoist and adjust the sails. This is sometimes challenging but most of the time it is very fulfilling to be one with nature, exploring new spots every day and discovering the world together.

Do you have any advice for other women looking to get into the sport?

My advice for other women is to just experience it, feel the breeze and embrace the waves.
